John represented Otago, New Plymouth, NZ Universities and NZ 1969-1981 (Captain 1973,75,78) Captained the first NZ side to beat Australia in 1978. Represented NZ Universities in Cricket.

An above average sportsman in Rugby, Athletics and tennis (still competing).

2017 Inducted to the NZB Hall of Fame.

John was appointed a district Court Judge in 1990, his Uncle Hoani MacDonald was inducted to the Maori Sports Hall of Fame in 2008.
